Indianapolis International Airport Announces New Direct Flights
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis International Airport officials announced Tuesday the addition of four new direct flight destinations beginning this spring, marking the largest route expansion in three years and providing Hoosiers with easier access to popular business and leisure destinations.
The new routes include daily flights to Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon; Charleston, South Carolina; and seasonal service to Reykjavik, Iceland. The expansion represents a combined investment of $12 million from three airlines and is expected to create approximately 150 new jobs at the airport.
Economic Impact Expected
"This is tremendous news for Indianapolis and the entire central Indiana region," said Airport Authority CEO Mario Rodriguez during Tuesday's announcement at the airport's civic plaza. "These new routes will strengthen our position as a major transportation hub while providing our residents and businesses with enhanced connectivity to key markets."
The Austin and Portland routes, operated by Southwest Airlines, will begin April 15 with one daily flight each. Delta Air Lines will launch the Charleston service on May 1, while Icelandair's seasonal Reykjavik route will operate three times weekly from June through September.
Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce President Sarah Mitchell emphasized the business benefits of the expansion. "The Austin route in particular opens up significant opportunities for our tech sector companies downtown and in areas like Mass Ave and the Meridian-Kessler corridor," Mitchell said. "We've heard from numerous businesses that this direct connection will facilitate partnerships and talent recruitment."
Tourism and Travel Benefits
The new destinations are expected to boost tourism in both directions. Charleston's historic charm and culinary scene have made it increasingly popular among Indianapolis travelers, while the Iceland route provides a gateway to European destinations through Reykjavik's hub.
For frequent travelers like Broad Ripple resident Jennifer Walsh, the expansion couldn't come soon enough. "I travel to Portland quarterly for work and having to connect through Denver or Chicago adds hours to my trip," Walsh said. "This will be a game-changer for business travelers and families wanting to explore the Pacific Northwest."
Infrastructure and Operations
The airport has been preparing for increased capacity following its $30 million terminal renovation completed last year. The new routes will utilize existing gates, though officials say additional ground support equipment and staffing will be necessary.
Airport spokesman David Chen noted that the expansion builds on Indianapolis International's reputation for efficiency and customer service. The airport has consistently ranked among the top five in North America for customer satisfaction.
Ticket sales for the new routes begin Thursday, with promotional fares available through the end of March. The airport expects the four new destinations to serve approximately 200,000 passengers annually once fully operational.
Indianapolis International currently offers direct flights to 47 destinations and serves more than 8.5 million passengers yearly, making it the 42nd busiest airport in the United States.
