INDIANAPOLIS — From cultural festivals to outdoor activities, Indianapolis offers residents and visitors plenty of entertainment options this week. Here are the top 10 events happening around the Circle City.
Cultural Events Take Center Stage
The Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields kicks off its winter exhibition series with "Hoosier Artists Through the Decades," featuring works from local painters and sculptors spanning the past century. The exhibition opens Tuesday and runs through March, showcasing pieces from artists across Marion County and surrounding areas.
"We're excited to highlight the incredible talent that has emerged from Indianapolis over the years," said Sarah Mitchell, curator of contemporary art at Newfields. "This exhibition really demonstrates how our local art scene has evolved while maintaining its distinctive character."
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre in the Old Northside neighborhood presents its winter production of "Steel Magnolias" Thursday through Sunday. The intimate venue on North Central Avenue promises an engaging performance in its 100-seat theater.
Outdoor Activities Despite Winter Weather
Eagle Creek Park hosts guided winter bird watching tours Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting at 8 a.m. from the Earth Discovery Center. Participants can spot winter migrants along the reservoir and through the park's wooded trails.
The Indianapolis Cultural Trail offers free guided walking tours Wednesday evenings, beginning at Monument Circle and covering highlights in the downtown area, including stops near Bankers Life Fieldhouse and the Indiana Convention Center.
Food and Entertainment
The Broad Ripple Winter Farmers Market continues its indoor season Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Broad Ripple High School gymnasium on Broad Ripple Avenue. Local vendors will offer seasonal produce, artisanal goods, and prepared foods.
Mass Ave hosts "First Friday" gallery walks and restaurant specials, with participating venues staying open late to showcase local artists and offer dining deals. The monthly event draws crowds to the arts district between downtown and the near east side.
"First Friday has become a real community tradition," said Marcus Thompson, executive director of the Mass Ave Arts District. "It's a great way for people to discover new restaurants and galleries while supporting local businesses during the slower winter months."
